How to Achieve Longevity in an Artistic Career

Whether you’ve already started working in your creative career or not, all artists are seeking longevity. However, career longevity isn’t an easy thing to achieve. It requires dedication and consistent passion for your work.

Here are a few tips that may help you achieve longevity in your artistic career:

  • Get out of your comfort zone: You can’t have a one-track mind if you’re looking for a long-term career as an artist. It’s necessary to adopt an “out-of-the-box” way of thinking. For example, if you’re a musician, try experimenting with a different genre. Many famous artists have reinvented themselves to showcase their range while staying relevant.

  • Figure out your signature style: Find something that makes you stand out. While you shouldn’t get stuck in your comfort zone, it’s just as important to find something that makes you recognisable. Your signature style can be as simple as a specific type of clothing item, like a hat. Or something bigger, like a public persona.
  • It’s never too late to start: achieving longevity doesn’t mean your artistic career has to begin in your teens, twenties, or even thirties. Different circumstances and privileges may prevent people from achieving success earlier. Many people have to work full-time jobs while side-hustling their art. Others have children and family members to look after. The point is to never give up on your artistic dreams. There are so many stories of actors in Hollywood who had to take up jobs as wait staff before their careers took off. Some examples include Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Aniston, and Russell Crowe.
  • Failure is not the end: You may think that failure means you have to quit, but it doesn’t. Use your failure as an opportunity to learn from your mistakes and stay grounded in your pursuits. Stay kind and humble if things don’t go your way. Bitterness doesn’t help you achieve anything. Rejection as an artist can be soul-crushing, but it can also be a creative opportunity in disguise. • Redefine what success means to you: Achieving success doesn’t always mean you need to reach Meryl Streep’s level of fame. That might be the desire for some, but not for everyone. Other artists want to get paid to do what they love so that they can keep a roof over their heads and their fridges full. Some may think their art is successful simply because people can relate to it. Explore what success will mean to you.

Betty White is an example of artistic longevity. She had a long and fruitful career as an actress and game show host. Not only was she known for her comedic talent, but she was also known for her animal advocacy and kindness towards others. You can achieve career longevity too. However, keep in mind that the journey will look different to everyone. There is no destination to being a professional artist. You’re constantly going to be growing and reinventing yourself. So enjoy your journey.
